What to Expect From Your First Massage
Booking your first ever massage can feel daunting. We walk you through everything — from arrival and consultation through to the treatment itself and aftercare — so you know exactly what to expect.
The prospect of arriving for your first massage can be a little daunting if you've never had one before. But not to worry — all of us at Lucy Hall Massage are experienced and highly trained professionals in deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, relaxation massage, sports massage and back massage. Whatever treatment you've chosen, here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.
When You Arrive
When you arrive for your first massage, you'll meet your therapist. Your therapist will be an expert in the treatment you've booked with us and will discuss any particular pain points you might have, any particular outcomes you want from the treatment (such as relief of pain, greater movement or relaxation), and importantly a brief medical interview. The interview helps us understand your needs better, as well as identify any particular conditions, allergies and medications you are taking that we need to be aware of. Everything discussed between you and your therapist is kept in strict medical confidence.
Starting Your Treatment
After talking with your therapist, they will ask you to disrobe and will leave the room to allow you to do this at your own pace in private. Your treatment room will be centred around a massage table, which will be furnished with an undersheet and oversheet (like your bed at home).
Once your therapist has left the room, remove your clothing while keeping underwear on. Then lie down on the massage table — your therapist will advise whether you should lie on your front or your back.
During Your Treatment
After you have settled onto the massage table, your therapist will begin treating you. They will take into consideration everything discussed in your interview, as well as check on how you're feeling throughout the treatment.
It's important to let your therapist know if you are uncomfortable at any point, or if you feel unwell. For deep tissue and Swedish massages, it's perfectly normal to feel slight discomfort — particularly at the beginning of the treatment — as your therapist works to release tension and heal your muscles.
After Your Treatment
When your treatment finishes, your therapist will let you know before leaving the room to allow you to dress. After you're up and about again, you'll be asked how you found the treatment, and will be offered water. It's very important to drink more water than usual after a massage. Your therapist will also discuss future treatments that might benefit you, as well as any lifestyle changes that might help you to stay well.
Don't Be Shy
Throughout the process, remember that your therapist is there to help you feel comfortable, relaxed and above all well. Don't be shy to discuss any and all concerns with them before, after or during your treatment. It's also perfectly fine to let us know if you're feeling a little nervous — it's completely normal, and we're here to help.
