The Origins of Hopi Ear Candling
Where does the practice of Hopi ear candling actually come from? We trace its roots through Native American tradition, modern adaptation, and the therapy you can experience today.
Hopi ear candling is a traditional therapy used by the Ancient Greeks and popularised by the Hopi Indian Tribe of the American South-West. The modern embodiment of the treatment is based on the form used by the Hopi Indians (whose name means "peaceful people"), who are renowned for their possession of incredible medicinal knowledge and spirituality.
The ear candles we use are quite different from your conventional Yankee candle. A Hopi ear candle is actually a cotton tube filled with beeswax, therapeutic oils and honey, that is gently inserted into the ear to draw out impurities and relieve pressure.
The original use of ear candling was for spiritual cleansing and purifying. It was said that they were used to cleanse and harmonise the different energy fields of the body. They were also used in initiation ceremonies and healing rituals — and the ear candles are depicted in many ancient drawings found in the caves of the Grand Canyon.
Who Does It Benefit?
Hopi candles can be used for a wide range of conditions that affect the head and ears, such as sinus congestion, excessive ear wax and glue ear. The rising air through the column of the candle, along with the gentle natural movement of the flame, gently massages the eardrum. Our clients often describe a soothing, light sensation in the ear and head area, and a general relaxing effect.
How Does It Work?
The client lies down on their side with their head supported on a pillow, so the ear canal is vertical. The process is completely painless and merely involves placing a hollow candle inside the ear, as far as is comfortable.
The candle is then lit, resulting in a gentle suction motion which draws the wax and impurities from the ear. The easiest way to understand the science behind it is to compare it to a chimney. The movement and compression between the ear canal and the candle chamber generates airflow, while the burning action infuses the herbs and essential oils into a vapour. This acts as a massaging function as well as softening any debris and wax.
Gentle popping can sometimes be heard — this is due to the rising air pushing through the auditory canal, which helps regulate ear pressure.
